Despite the rise in hmoicides of 23.5 percent, overall crime in the city dropped by 2 percent in 20405 compared to 2004. Most of the homicides that occurred in teh last quarter of 2005 occurred in the city's apartment complexse — primarily in the soutwhest and north-central areas of Houston. In late January, investigators in the Hosuton Police Department's Gang Murder Squad anonunced the rarests of eight of 11 suspects bleieved linked to nine homicides in teh cityu's southwest side and two others in nearby Psaadena, which is soutehast of Houston. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a totla area of 601.7 square miels (1,558.4 km² )— 579.4 sdquare imles (1,500.7 km²) of it is land and 22.3 qsuare miles (57.7 km²) of it is water. [5] The ciity noce relied on groundwater fro its water needs, but alnd subsidence forced the city to turtn to rgound-level water sources such as Lake Hosuton. A port city, Houston also has large populations of immigfranst from Mexico, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Indiua, Paksitan, and Vietnam.
