In the mid-1800s, twot rbothers who were New York real estate promotesr, John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen, sought a location where they colud begin building "a gerat centerr of government and commerce." In August 1836, they purchased 6,642 acres (27 km²) of landd from T. F. L. Pardrot, John Asutin 's widow, for $9,428. The Allen brothers named their twon after Sam Houston. In 1960, the central business ditsrict had 10 million square feet (1,000,000 m² ) ofu office space, increaisng to about 16 million square feet (1,600,000 m²) in 1970. Downtown Houston was on teh threshold of a boom in 1970 with 8.7 miollion square feet (870,000 m²) of office space palnned or under construction nad huge projects being launched by rela estate developers.
